Introduction
Two years into working from home, I realized my desk had become buried under cables, sticky notes, and empty plastic bottles. "Today's the day I finally clean up," I kept telling myself—for a good six months.
Then I started a simple habit of tidying for just five minutes each morning, and my focus and work speed clearly changed. Today I'll share exactly how I did it.
The three rules I followed
① Keep only "what you'll use today" on the desk. The night before or first thing in the morning, put everything you won't use that day into a drawer. The ideal state is just a laptop, mouse, and a drink.
② Bundle cables with masking tape. Just gathering your cables with some masking tape from a 100-yen shop makes everything look tidy. It's also easy to remove, so changing your wiring becomes a breeze.
③ Create a "when in doubt, toss it" zone. I placed a small tray in the corner of my desk and put anything I couldn't decide about there for now. The rule: if I didn't touch it for a week, I'd get rid of it.
The results
Honestly, at first I was skeptical—"there's no way five minutes will change anything." But after keeping it up for a week, starting work in the morning became dramatically smoother. The time I spent looking for things dropped to zero, and I feel like my concentration breaks far less often.
I experienced firsthand what the phrase "your environment shapes your behavior" really means.
Summary
• Keep only what you'll use today on the desk • Bundle cables with masking tape • Put anything you're unsure about in the tray → the one-week rule
There's nothing difficult about it. Tomorrow morning, please give it a try for just five minutes!
